Choose Life (Part Eleven): El Shaddai

Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” (John 5:5-6, NKJV)
We continue this week with the story of the sick man healed at the Pool of Bethesda. [John 5:1-15].

Shallow People:

The challenge for most people is that of lacking in depth. They tend to keep their hearts away from what they are involved in. They lack intentionality in their living. They tend to be satisfied with just doing the barest minimum to get by - no investment, no anticipation of returns. "Ce Sera Sera" is the melody of their lives. They have no interest in going the extra mile.

The cry of pitiable heart being, just give me enough for the day, I don’t want too much. That is rather shallow. Don't you think? The call of life is to live deep, not fast. It is how well, not how fast. God's call is for us to cast our nets into the deep. That is where the worthwhile fishes are. They are not in the shallow waters.

El-Shaddai:

We get a rude awakening when we meet "The God of more than enough" – “The Lord God Almighty, El-Shaddai, The multi-breasted One, The I am that I am.” We meet the God who is not just interested in giving us life but wants to give us more than we need - more than enough, in abundance, good measure, overflowing, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. [John 10:10; Luke 6:38]

That is a challenge to our religious mindset. It does make our minds cringe, crying, "Lord, but I am unworthy." No wonder a great many religious folks go to great lengths to say, “His blessings are only spiritual.” Really? If all we need are spiritual blessings, we might as well die and go to heaven.
