ANSWER:Awesome question! The questions to ask include, do our children need to ask when we know they have needs? Will we be happy with a child who never asks? Which children will we be closest to - the one who freely tells us of their need, trusting in the relationship, or the one who tells us nothing because they assume we already know? What if there is a divergence of views? How does that get resolved?
If there is anything we learn from the story of the prodigal son [Luke 15:11-32], it is that those who never ask have a tendency to harbor resentment. They tend not to be secure enough in their relationship to take hold of the promises. Their focus is on attaining that which is already freely given. Not so is God’s intent of a relationship with Him. He wants us to freely receive that which He has made available. [Romans 8:32] And, the way to do this is by praying (Asking, Seeking, and knocking). [Matthew 7:7]
Prayer is God's ordain way for us to invite Him into our life, situation and circumstance. [Hebrews 4:16; Psalms 2:8; Jeremiah 33:3; Psalms 65:2] He does not just burst on the scene. He always respects our choice. That is why He says, "I have put before you life and death. You choose." [Deuteronomy 30:19-20] He says, "He stands at the door knocking." [Revelations 3:20] He will only come in if we let Him. The place of prayer is where we choose life. The place of prayer is where we open the door and let Him in.
